(180331) @funkyjh2: today of all days, as i thought about the “scent”, i thought about the perfume that jonghyun used so i’m posting this. i’ve liked it too so i’ve used it but it’s the perfume that jonghyun used really a lot. today, when even using all five senses, it doesn’t feel real. if i could feel that smell .. maybe it would have been sufficient on that day.

Ever since I heard about Jonghyun’s suicide yesterday, I had been in pure shock. It was like I was dreaming and the world was beginning to shift around me. He was one of my favorites in kpop. It was too real, too groundbreaking to swallow.
I was numb.
I led the day mourning his death, unable to focus on literally anything and everything because of how strange and horrifying this all was.
It felt surreal
But, today, I am angry.
Jonghyun’s death had been trending #1 around the world yesterday and his suicide sparked so much conversation. People are beginning to talk about the stress that kpop idols have. People are beginning to talk about just how ruthless entertainment industries are. People are beginning to understand that there is a horrifying lack of understanding and care for mental health issues in both South Korea and all over the world.
I am happy that these issues are being talked about.
But I am also angry that Jonghyun had to die for people to open their eyes to them.
When will we begin to listen and care for one another without needing a tragedy, a martyr, a broken soul to show us the way?
This isa failure.
A failure in society.
A failure of a country.
A failure of the system.
They have all failed Jonghyun. They have failed the one million people who take their lives every year. They have failed our children, our siblings, our parents, our grandparents. They have failed our friends, our families, our countrymen, fellow citizens of the world.
A week after his death everything will go back to being the same. His death will be tragic, but society will cover and forget about everything. Mental health will become another underrated issue and we will need another martyr for people to care again.
But I won’t allow it.
I won’t allow for another precious life to vanish because we forgot to care again. I won’t allow for Jonghyun’s death, and everyone else who had thought that life was not worth living, to be forgotten.
No more tragedies. No more martyrs. No more broken souls.
No more failure.
I am asking for everyone to fight against this global epidemic. I am asking for everyone to do their very best in helping our world with this issue. Just saying ‘hi, how are you?’ or ‘have a good day’ can make such a difference to people suffering. We need to show that we care and are there for people in need, that they are not alone. Please donate to charities and engage in your community. Join the conversation. Please get some help if you or anyone around you is suffering.
Do not let Jonghyun’s or anyone else’s death be in vain.
I believe that the Golden Disk Awards this year had the some of the most moving tributes for Jonghyun. From IU’s touching speech about mental health, self-care, and grieving to seeing Yeri crying during IU’s encore stage to hearing Jonghyun’s comforting words with Lee Hi’s breathtaking performance of ‘Breathe’ to Taeyeon’s tears while watching Lee Hi’s performance to Leeteuk’s speech asking everyone to always remember Jonghyun, all of these moments have showed us the impact that Jonghyun has had on his fellow artists’.
Thank you Golden Disk Awards for remembering Jonghyun. Thank IU for reminding people that artists and idols are still human Thank you Yeri for being strong at such a young age. Death is such a foreign concept to many of us until we are faced with it suddenly and it can suffocating but you are fighting so well. Thank you Lee Hi for having the courage to sing ‘Breathe’ because I couldn’t imagine how hard it was for you to decide to do this. I broke down when you cried during ‘Breathe’ Thank you Taeyeon for still being strong despite the pain (and congrats on both yours AND SNSD’s Bonsang because I didn’t expect SNSD to get one!!) Thank you Leeteuk for reminding us to always remember Jonghyun and to support the rest of the SHINee members. Thank you to all the other artists who joined in remembering Jonghyun of all the times he has given us comfort and peace at mind with his words and music. All of you give each of us so much joy and happiness every day. Like IU said, always remember however that your happiness comes first.
I know this is gonna sound cheesy but can we as shawols (or anyone for that matter) please make a promise to never stop talking about Jonghyun? I want to talk about him for the rest of my life; and not just his death but his life, how he loved to laugh and the funny things he would say, the weird faces he would make, the way he scrunched up his face when he was really happy, how he slept with his eyes partially open; or how can we forget “IS THIS THE REALITY YOU WANTED?!”. I made a promise to him to love everyone I meet, to never be afraid of showing love to another person because you never know who might need it. I just don’t want him to ever fade out. I want to talk about him forever, so that maybe we can prevent someone else from feeling the same way he did. Let’s promise to never stop talking about him.
